The Coach's Corner — learn the job, Luka at your side

Tell Luka your sport, your level, and your state — he'll lay out your path.

You don't need to know where coaching starts. That's Luka's job here. Tell him you're a new youth volunteer, a school coach, or just somebody who wants to actually understand the rules — he walks you through what your league will ask of you, sits with you through the rules exams (he teaches every question from the bank's own explanations), hands you the forms, and points you at your state's real doors. Everything below is the library he works from. Start with the conversation.

The honest line, up front: the exams in this Corner teach and test the rules. They are not any league's or association's official certification — your league or association runs its own official exam, and we prepare you for it. A completion certificate here says "completed the clubhouse course," full stop. It is not a credential, and we never print the word "certified" on one.

Start in your state

Coaching and officiating both run through your state association — that's the real front door, everywhere in the country. Pick your state (Luka uses your saved location if you have one) and you'll get the association, its coaching-requirements page, the officials' registration door, the youth-league finders, and what your state asks of volunteers. Ask Luka the same questions in chat — he answers from this same directory, word for word.

What your league will ask of you

Guidance, not legal advice. Requirements change — confirm yours with your league and association. The California list below is the verified example; your state's panel above carries its own verified note where an official source states one.

California — the school coach's certification list (CIF)

  1. A general coaching-education course — the NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching course or the CIF Coaching Principles course (California Education Code §35179.1 sets the program).
  2. A concussion course — renews every 2 years.
  3. Sudden cardiac arrest training — renews every 2 years.
  4. A heat acclimatization course — renews every 2 years.
  5. First Aid and CPR certification.

California — youth-organization volunteers (AB 506)

  • Live Scan fingerprint background check through the CA DOJ — done separately for each organization; it does not transfer.
  • Mandated-reporter training (the state's free training qualifies).
  • It applies to "regular volunteers": 18+, with direct contact with or supervision of children for more than 16 hours a month or 32 hours a year.
  • Concussion law for youth organizations (Health & Safety Code §124235): parent/athlete information, coach training, remove the athlete on suspicion, written clearance before return.

The rules exams — Luka tutors, you test

Every question here was written for this clubhouse from published rule summaries — never copied from an association exam or rulebook text. Study mode walks the whole bank with the explanation and the rule citation on every answer; the scored exam draws 25 fresh questions and passes at 80%. Miss one and Luka teaches it from the bank's own explanation — he never invents a rule. Football and basketball, three levels each: youth league forms, high school (NFHS), and college & pro.

The decision exams — graded by the Lab's own model

Exams graded by the same model that powers the Lab. Fourth-and-short, the kick-or-go call, the try decision, the endgame foul — the football scenarios are priced by the clubhouse's win-probability model with play rates from its own training data, and the basketball ones by arithmetic printed right on the answer. Scenarios the numbers couldn't honestly separate didn't ship — they're named in the model's audit notes, not graded on fake precision.

The forms — fill them here, print them anywhere

Coaches pay course sites real money for packets like these. Here they're part of the room: fillable on screen, saved on your device (and to your account when you're signed in), printable filled or blank. Each form carries a "Have Luka walk me through it" button — he fills it in with you.

Coaches worth studying

Sourced fact profiles — era, record, and the principle each coach is known for. Where a licensed or free source carries a verbatim quote, we print it attributed; otherwise there's no quote, because we don't reconstruct them. Faces will join these profiles through the clubhouse's Wikimedia Commons photo pipeline — that's the named follow-on, not built yet.

Coaching girls' and women's teams? Her Game is the clubhouse's women's sports desk — and the whistle side of the room lives in the Officials' Room.
